Assessing Reading Comprehension of Content Area Texts

One day

- General education, ESL and/or bilingual teachers working with ELLs in grades 3 and up who are decoding but not yet comprehending printed text

- Introduce research-based assessment and instruction for increasing reading comprehension in the content areas

Assessing Content Area Writing: Text Structures

One day

- General education, ESL and/or bilingual teachers working with ELLs in grades 3 and up who are already writing at sentence-level and are ready to move to paragraph-level writing

- Learn how text structures (the way texts are organized) are culturally-based and discover the five predominant text structures in content area texts

 

- Engage in creating paragraphs using colorful manipulatives and be able to use scoring rubrics to assess writing

 

- See the importance of teaching and assessing text structures with ELLs

Assessing Oral Language

One day

- General education, ESL and/or bilingual teachers

- Find out the key differences between oral and written language based on second language acquisition research

 

- Listen to and rate student oral language samples using holistic and analytic scoring rubrics

 

- Receive guidance in aligning state standards for oral language with your classroom learning activities and assessments

Scaffolding Reading Instruction & Assessment

Half day

- General education, ESL and/or bilingual teachers working with intermediate ELLs in grades 3 and up

- Understand scaffolding, its helpfulness to ELLs, and how teachers can provide it

 

- Simulate different approaches to scaffolding using visuals, hands-on activities and language simplification to promote comprehension of content area texts

Scaffolding Content Area Reading Assessments

Half day

- General education, ESL and/or bilingual teachers working with intermediate ELLs in grades 3 and up

- Introduce participants to scaffolding approaches for increasing the validity and reliability of teacher-made assessments of reading comprehension in the content areas

Assessment Toolbox--Using the Right Tool

Half day

- General education, ESL and/or bilingual teachers working with ELLs

- Discover a variety of performance-based assessment tools for measuring the progress of ELLs in oral language, reading and writing

 

- Receive templates that can be easily adapted and used for different tasks and settings

Designing Scoring Rubrics that Promote Learning

Half day

- General education, ESL and/or bilingual teachers working with ELLs

-Introduce a four-step process for designing your own standards-based scoring rubrics

Standards-Based Instruction & Assessment Half day - General education, ESL and/or bilingual teachers working with ELLs

- Guide participants in the design of instructional activities and assessments based on standards.

 

- Compare ELP standards to content area standards, learn to assess students' needs, draft standards-based lesson plans, assess procedural and declarative knowledge, and use assessment results to guide instruction
