Measure of Developing English Language (MODEL)™

WIDA is pleased to introduce a new series of academic English language proficiency assessments known as the WIDA Measure of Developing English Language (MODEL)™ for Kindergarten through grade 12. Many teachers and other education experts offered input in the development of the new assessment. Additionally, all test items are aligned to the WIDA English Language Proficiency Standards. In 2006, TESOL adopted the WIDA ELP Standards as their ELP Standards.

These engaging, full-color assessments can serve multiple purposes. They may aid in the identification and placement of English language learners, be used for benchmark evaluation during the school year, and/or be used as a summative measure of progress for reporting purposes. In WIDA Consortium member states, the WIDA MODEL™ will most commonly be used as an optional replacement to the W-APT™ screener test. The W-APT™ will remain available as a free download on this website for districts that decide not to purchase the WIDA MODEL™.

Each test assesses students' abilities in all four language domains (Listening, Speaking, Writing, and Reading), and evaluates Social and Instructional English as well as academic language corresponding to the subject areas of Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. The tests are part of a complete system of products and services for English language learners, including curricular and instructional guidance through the WIDA ELP Standards and other related products such as the CAN DO Descriptors, as well as support through professional development and research activities.

Development of the WIDA MODEL™ assessments was conducted through WIDA's partnership with the Center for Applied Linguistics in Washington, DC, and production and dissemination of the tests is being handled by MetriTech, Inc. of Champaign, Illinois.
