WIDA's ELD Standards, 2012 Edition

WIDA is in the final stages of developing its 2012 Edition of the English Language Development Standards. From mid-September through mid-November 2011, WIDA collected valuable input from educators across the country via grade-level surveys and a comment box on this page. We received over 675 survey submissions and over 100 open comments! Thank you so much for this tremendous support which allows us to create a final product that is useful and relevant to educators.

This feedback is currently being reviewed and incorporated into the final version of the 2012 Edition. Although the formal feedback period has ended, you are still welcome to review the drafts and send any questions or comments to help@wida.us. Thank you again for your contributions to this publication!

Here are some suggestions for how you might organize your review of the draft:

  1. Become familiar with the WIDA ELP Standards, 2007 Edition, as well as the Resource Guide (if you are not already). See the 2007 Edition PDF files at right.

  2. Review our 2012 Edition Overview Tutorial as many times as you like! Please make sure your computer's sound is turned on so you can hear the narration. The tutorial is approximately 10 minutes long.

  3. Look over the Frequently Asked Questions PDF icon and Glossary PDF icon documents related to the draft release.

  4. Examine the Topic Map PDF icon and select the grade levels and/or topics of interest to you. Please note that the 2012 Edition will not offer strands for every domain within every standard, so this map lists the contents of the draft.

  5. Look at the Defining Features of Academic Language PDF icon and think about how it applies at your grade level.

  6. Download and view the drafts for the grade level(s) you wish to examine.

Please note: WIDA plans to release PreKindergarten standards for 3- and 4-year-olds at a later date.

Virginia Department of Education ELP Standards Videos

The Virginia Department of Education has generously offered to share a series of videos created by teachers, for teachers, to promote understanding of the WIDA ELP Standards and offer example lesson plans based on certain language functions.

You may view the videos and download lesson materials from the Virginia Department of Education website.

WIDA encourages and appreciates the willingness of our member states to share any such local efforts in order to maximize the number of educators benefitting from your work. If your state or district has unique or outstanding projects underway that can be shared with the consortium, please contact Andrea Cammilleri.at acammilleri@wisc.edu.

WIDA's ELP Standards, 2004 Edition

The WIDA ELP Standards, 2004 Edition, is comprised of four documents.

The Overview Document is an introduction to understanding and using the Standards.

Three frameworks

The three frameworks of the 2004 Edition allow you to focus on classroom learning, assessment, or look at both simulaneously. They are:

  • Classroom framework: the model performance indicators (MPIs) in this framework focus on the process of learning, offering expectations for student involvement in performance-based, hands-on learning.
  • Large-scale framework: the MPIs in this framework are suitable for large-scale assessment and therefore lack interactive supports for students. These MPIs emphasize the products of learning.
  • Combined framework: integrates the elements of both the classroom and large-scale frameworks.
