English Language Proficiency (ELP) Standards provide educators of English language learners (ELLs) with a curriculum and assessment planning tool for content area language objectives. The proficiency-based strands help educators determine individual ELLs' English language proficiency levels and how to appropriately challenge them in reaching the next levels.
Spanish Language Arts (SLA) Standards were modeled after WIDA's ELP Standards with the goal of assisting in planning curriculum for bilingual and two-way immersion programs. Research supports the notion that students benefit when they have foundational literacy skills in their first language and when schools incorporate their primary language and culture into the classroom.
Search the Standards is a tool allowing educators to search for strands of English language proficiency Model Performance Indicators according to a particular grade level cluster, standards, language domain, example topic or key word.
CAN DO Descriptors For teachers or administrators unfamiliar with the ELP standards, the CAN DO Descriptors provide a starting point
for working with ELLs and a collaborative tool for planning. The CAN DO Descriptors are also
general enough to be appropriate to share with students and their family members to help them understand
the continuum of English language development.
