WIDA ELP Standards and Resource Guide, 2007 Edition
The WIDA ELP Standards and Resource Guide, 2007 Edition, Pre-Kindergarten through Grade 12 is a key component of WIDA's mission of promoting educational equity and academic achievement to linguistically diverse students.
WIDA's vision of language proficiency encompasses both social and academic contexts tied to schooling. The standards are the heart of WIDA's comprehensive assessment system, including ACCESS for ELLs®, and are a resource for teachers' planning of instruction and assessment. Furthermore, they provide a guide for the development of curriculum and materials aimed at helping all students to achieve academic English language proficiency.
The WIDA Consortium's English Language Proficiency Standards for English Language Learners (ELLs) in PreKindergarten through Grade 12 encompass:
- Social and Instructional language
- the language of Language Arts
- the language of Mathematics
- the language of Science
- the language of Social Studies
WIDA's 2007 edition of Standards are structured within two frameworks:
Formative framework: the model performance indicators (PIs) in this framework focus on the process of learning, offering expectations for student involvement in performance-based, hands-on learning.
Summative framework: The model PIs in this framework are suitable for large-scale assessment and are the basis for WIDA's ACCESS for ELLs® English language proficiency test. These PIs emphasize the products of learning.
The Resource Guide is an introduction to using the Standards. It includes explanations of each of the components of the Standards' matrices, suggestions for the use of supports, and an overview of transforming the standards to meet your particular curricular and instructional goals. The final sections of the Resource Guide contain many of the tools WIDA has developed for use with our assessments and in the classroom such as the Performance Definitions, the Speaking and Writing Rubrics for Classroom Assessment, and the CAN DO Descriptors.
